2.2.1 Cortex
Cortex is outer dark red region that consists mainly of the glomerulus and Bowman’s capusule of the nephron.
Outer layer of cortex is protected by a fibrous capsule.
2.2.2 Medulla
Pale red region that consists of 8 to 10 conical structures called the pyramids.
Radial stripes on the medulla pyramids indicate kidney tubules or nephrons.
Urine is formed in the nephrons.
Each kidney consists of about one million nephrons.
2.2.3 Renal pelvis
Enlarged portion of the ureter inside the kidney.
