My name is Delicia Williams. I am a special education teacher in Atlanta Georgia. As an educator, I have witnessed the obstacles individuals with mild disabilities are faced with. Struggles ranging from learning disorders and physical limitations to developmental delays or social/emotional disturbances. While these individuals are entitled to a Free Appropriate Public Education from birth, according to the legislative law titled the IDEA ACT of 2004, their supports and services are often reduced or terminated once they turn 21. My goal is to help individuals with mild disabilities who have Aged Out of high school... S.T.R.I.V.E! STRIVE stands for Socializing to Reinforce Independence, Versatility, and Exceptional Excellence. I will use socialization as the foundation in assisting these individuals with mastering life skills. Life skills such as Communication, Decision Making, Cooperation, Handling Criticism, and Information Technology may come easy to most, however, Individuals with disabilities frequently rely on guidance from family members when asked to demonstrate these skills. I am committed to taking my knowledge about special education beyond the classroom. My experiences as an educator has afforded me the opportunity to see first-hand what the needs of individual with disabilities are. I will organize events, plan trips, and develop instructional activities to strengthen their ability to interact with others, adapt to new situations, and maneuver the world around them. In order to Kick Start my program, I need your help. I am asking for donations to support me with giving the first S.T.R.I.V.E event. This event will be a formal dance taking place in the month of July. Adults with mild disabilities are invited to come out and enjoy an evening with their peers. During the event, guest will meet and greet others with similar goals and ambitions all while dancing the night away. My hopes is that these interactions will promote networking, knowledge, and lifelong friendships. All donations received from GOFUNDME will go towards giving the dance and future specialized activities. I know with your help I can began my journey with supporting adults with disabilities as they learn how to STRIVE within their community.
