My name is John S. Williams. That's right, put that "S" in my name because being called "John Williams" sounds so simple. So please, do me a favor and give me that "S". When I'm talking to people on the telephone they always ask, "Is that "S" as in Sam?" I always give them the same answer, "No, that's 'S' as in Super, Sexy, or Sensational." You're probably thinking what they were thinking. You are about to give me another "S" word. My sister, Mona, would always do just that.
I always describe myself as, "A black man who was born and raised in the hills of West Virginia." I don't like a lot of adjectives or those adjective phrases attached to me. A couple of years ago I overheard two of my grandsons arguing about something that I had told them. I decided at that very moment that I needed to write down my "old stories."
This book, "A Place Called Eagle", is written for them--my grandkids, about a time when life was extremely difficult, but good.
John is a former educator. He graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology (WVIT). He has a Bachelors Degree in Math and went on to teach high school math at the now defunct DuPont High School in DuPont, WV. He was a professor at WVIT for a few years where he taught African American Studies. He was instrumental in the formation of Tech Organization of Black Unity (TOBU), which is still going strong today. John currently lives with his family in Lawrenceville, GA.
This is the memoir of a country boy who was fortunate enough to have been born and raised in "A Place Called Eagle."
