The Governing Board encourages teachers to use supplementary materials which are relevant to curriculum objectives and appropriate for students' ages and abilities. By using such materials, teachers can introduce content and instructional strategies that enrich the curriculum, enhance learning, help students make critical judgments, and stimulate their intellectual growth.
When selecting supplementary materials for classroom use, teachers should carefully review them and provide appropriate introductory and follow-up activities. Supplementary materials should not supplant the use of basic texts or teaching activities. Films must be used within legal copyright limits.
The following is the establish prescreening process to be used when a teacher desires to show a film not previously approved by the district, county or state for educational purposes. The film may be used if found educationally suitable when so previewed.
The teacher shall inform the principal of the desire to consider use of a film not on the district, county state approved list.
The principal shall form a screening committee of the teacher, the department chairperson, a teacher from another department and the principal or designee to review the film to take into account the individual merits of the film.
Before showing any film not previously approved by the district, county or state for educational purposes, the teacher shall notify parents/guardians that the film will be shown. Students who do not receive parental permission to view the film shall be excused to an alternative supervised activity.

By using such materials, teachers can introduce content and compliment instructional strategies that enrich the curriculum, enhance learning, help students make critical judgments, and stimulate their intellectual growth.
When selecting supplementary materials for classroom use, teachers should carefully review them and provide appropriate introductory and follow-up activities. The classrooms of the District are not
meant as locations to “show movies.” Supplementary materials should not supplant the use of basic texts or teaching activities. Films must be used within legal copyright limits.
The following is the established prescreening process to be used when a teacher desires to show a feature length film that is generally distributed for entertainment purposes and not previously approved by the district, county or state for educational purposes. The film may be used if found educationally suitable when so previewed.
The teacher shall inform the principal of the desire to consider use of a film not on the district, county, or state approved list.
The principal shall form a screening committee of the teacher, a teacher from another department or grade level, the department or grade level chair, the principal or designee, a parent, and the district librarian to review the merits of the film. The district will maintain a list of reviewed films.
The Screening Committee shall determine whether the film:
Is directly applicable to the curricular objectives of the course of study.
Is appropriate for the age group of the students.
Is appropriate for the abilities of the students to understand the concepts and issues contained within the film.
Will enhance the curriculum by stimulating and/or reinforcing learned concepts.
Does not absorb a disproportionate amount of instructional time in relation to its educational value.
Does or does not require teacher preparation and follow-up prior to and after the showing
Acceptable/Non-Acceptable Videos or Films For Classroom Utilization : Arranged by the “Movie Rating System”
Before showing any film approved by the district, county, or state for educational purposes, the teacher shall notify parent/guardians in writing by mail according to the attached Parent Notification Matrix that the film will be shown, including a justification for its use with respect to the curriculum of the class. Parents may request in writing that their student be excluded from viewing the film and be assigned an alternative supervised activity.
