Last year was a tough one for our membership, and for the community as a whole. From deep cuts to educational programs, to the unprofessional treatment of Eastport-South Manor teachers, to the dire warnings issued by school officials about district financial concerns, we faced a multitude of challenges. I was proud to see us stand together to face them.
Although these concerns continue to plague our community, on at least one front, we have some clarity. The budgetary fears raised by district leaders were unfounded. Despite district leaders’ pleas to the contrary, according to the Eastport-South Manor’s ST-3 report — a detailed fiscal analysis submitted to the State Education Department in October, as required by law — the district is in “good financial health.” Our reserves comprise a healthy 4 percent of our budget; indeed, they stand at the maximum threshold districts are allowed to hold in their reserve fund.
The Eastport-South Manor Teachers’ Association’s own line-by-line analysis of the district’s 150-page ST-3 report corroborates this finding. Completed in conjunction with our parent union, New York State United Teachers, the report also shows there will be an anticipated $5.5 million in the unrestricted fund balance.
To ensure the facts are heard, we’ve posted the district auditor’s presentation, and our independent analysis, on our website. As the Eastport-South Manor Teachers Association enters this budget season, we’re hopeful that we won’t face the same challenges. I encourage all interested union members and community residents to take a moment to read through the reports. Having accurate information is the only way we can make sound decisions for our district.
In solidarity,
Linda Wygonik
