collage, 12" x 12"
My work always begins with collage. I use photographs and old magazine clippings as a means to create a ground on the surface. Pictures are chosen based on color, but I gravitate toward certain images: dramatic skies, night scenes, windows and doorways. Once the collage is arranged, I use the shapes to dictate the direction of the artwork. Colors found within the photographs are used to smooth the transitions between images. Sometimes I will obliterate an image or alter it with the paint, other times I will exaggerate an area with an emerging pattern or texture. Each layer is a reaction to the next. I often work on two or more pieces at a time and there is an ongoing dialogue that develops between them. Recently I have been exploring the use of quilt patterns and breaking the edge of the composition.Â
The resulting pieces are landscapes of sorts, with a strange dream-like quality. The images within feel like a story taken out of order, like we have skipped to the middle without knowing how we got there. Horizons glow softly, hinting at memories long forgotten. My collages explore a nebulous boundary between inner and outer worlds.
