What is IRIS?

IRIS is a multi-user secure web-based data management and analysis system with powerful built-in GIS capabilities.

Background

The World Bank funded a project in Mongolia to support preparedness for occurrence of an emerging disease, such as avian influenza H5N1, influenza H1N1 or SARS. The project required a highly generic, secure and flexible data storage structure with a powerful reporting and filtering systems. Additional features are being added to meet the needs of other countries which plan to use the system, and it can be made available for users from any country.

Secure cloud based data storage Users can access data from any remote location using a browser or mobile app. Access to data is secured using Role-Based Access Control.

Dynamic data storage systemUsers can create and modify data schemas in real time, allowing the system to grow and evolve to meet changing requirements of users over time.

Predicting disease risk for a countryIRIS integrates national databases with satellite data and can use all relevant data to estimate spatial disease risk for all or part of a country.

Disease recording and health monitoringThe system has all the required facilities to record, manage and coordinate work between all participating agencies in the event of a disease outbreak.

Surveillance design and managementUsing the flexible data storage system and project management facilities, IRIS is able to manage disease surveillance and control projects.

Incident investigation and responseUsing the sophisticated reporting and analysis functions, IRIS is able to manage disease investigations and responses.

Integration of diverse data sourcesThe centralized storage system supports the integration of information from a variety of sources allowing for more accurate analysis and better decision making.

Multilingual interfaceIRIS supports full internationalization, users can create a national version by adding one or more national languages.
