The Energy and Process Engineering Laboratory, established in year 2007, assimilates the multidisciplinary aspects related to the energy generation, process intensification, optimization and control. Formulating the theoretical concepts and mathematical models, we address the major topics as clathrate hydrates, distillation and fuel cell. The research on clathrate hydrate thermodynamics and kinetics is focused on energy generation from natural gas hydrates, as well as its application in gas storage/separation and desalination purposes. In the area of distillation, the research is focused on both the batch and continuous modes with applied techniques of multi-objective optimization and control. Developing dynamics of fuel cell, we synthesize the nonlinear controllers for proton exchange membrane fuel cell and its integrated units with methanol reformer and airflow cooling system. In addition, experimental works are going on to synthesize the adsorbents using the industrial solid waste for economically and efficiently treating the contaminated waste water.

We develop unique multi-objective optimization (MOO) strategy to propose optimal conditions for batch distillation processes. Process optimization involves several conflicting technical, economic and environmental objectives, which lead to many equally-good optimal solutions. In this light, an elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-based MOO strategy is highly recommended to find the optimal configurations.
Our laboratory develops the thermodynamic and kinetic models for clathrate hydrates which find its use in fields of energy production, desalination, and gas separation/storage. We employ the fundamental science, quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics simulations to model its phase transitions in several practical aspects.
Algal Bio-diesel is a promising alternative for the conventional fuel. We model and analyze the techno-economic feasibility of the production of algal bio-diesel in the reactive distillation based superstructures.
We develop theory of the nonlinear controllers for proton exchange membrane fuel cell and its integrated units with methanol reformer and airflow cooling system.
We develop the non-conventional nano-adsorbents (nano-metal oxide composite, metal organic frame work) from industrial solid wastes, and investigate their performance for removing multiple harmful organic and inorganic chemicals and pollutants in batch and continuous mode.
We investigate the performance improvement of a dividing wall column (DWC), extractive DWC and heat integrated DWC for the separation of azeotropic systems.
