The aim of this paper is to analyze the effect of career breaks around childbirth and of parental leave policies on maternal labor market outcomes. I use Italian administrative data on the universe of dependent workers in the private sector to estimate the impact of childbirth on maternal earnings using an event study that accounts for individual fixed effects. Moreover, I exploit the introduction of a childcare subsidy conditional on early return to work as a quasi-experimental setting to estimate the causal impact of the length of parental leave on maternal labor market performance in the short and medium run. Preliminary results show that women experience more than 35% loss in earnings after the birth of a child, mostly driven by a reduction in labor supply, and the loss is persistent up to three years after maternity leave. The shorter leave induced by the introduction of conditional childcare subsidy increases maternal earnings and reduces the probability of leaving the labor market in the short run.
This paper analyses the impact of regularizing undocumented migrant workers on labor market outcomes at firms' and individual level. Using unique administrative data by the Italian Social Security Institute archives, on the universe of firms, workers and enforcement strategies, we evaluate Italy's largest legalization process ever. We use an unexpected quasi-random auditing program to deal with firms' self-selection into treatment. Our results show that the regularization had a positive impact on firm employment only in the short run and no effects on firm-level wages. Nonetheless, we provide evidence that around 75% of regularized migrants remain attached to the Italian formal labor market. Further, legalized migrants' coworkers are not (negatively) affected by the reform. Our findings highlight higher migrants' mobility to other firms, provinces and industries as an important driver of our results.
Wealth Inequalities among Seniors: the Role of Marital Histories across Cohorts, accepted Review of Economics of the Household [link]
with Carole Bonnet, Benoît Rapoport and Anne SolazWealth accumulation is the result of several factors: saving behaviors, inheritances, work and marital histories. The evolution of diversity of marital histories and the increasing interest in gender wealth inequality raise questions about the specific contribution of marital history to wealth accumulation, and how (and whether) this relation changes across cohorts. Focusing on individuals aged 50 or more and using data from wealth surveys conducted in France in 2004, 2009 and 2014, we evaluate the contribution of marital histories to individual wealth across di erent birth cohorts. We find that the accumulated wealth significantly depends on marital history, especially for women, while the relation is less relevant for men. In particular, we document large disparities among women and the existence of a couple premium, married and widow being wealthier than divorced, separated or always single. While on average marital history does not seem to be associated with different wealth accumulation for men, we find higher heterogeneity across the wealth distribution, as marital history plays a role in the lowest quartiles. Over birth cohorts, it seems that marital break-up is responsible for less accumulated wealth for women.
Divorce Rates and Marital Contracts in France and Italy
with Marion LeturcqRecent papers have found that the share of married couples opting for a separation of assets regime have increased in France (Frémeaux and Leturcq, 2013) and in Italy (Bayot and Voena, 2014) over the last decades. One of the proposed explanations to explain this trend hypothesizes that the increasing risk of divorce have made couples more reluctant to pool their assets, as separating assets is seen as a protection against divorce, especially among couples more at-risk of divorce. However, there is no evidence that couples who opted for the matrimonial regime of separation of assets are more at-risk of divorce. The goal of this paper is to fill this gap measuring divorce rates across couples with different marital contracts. We use French survey data and Italian administrative data on marriages and divorce to compute the differential rates of divorce for couple who choose different property regimes upon marriage.
Fertility, Maternal Employment and Household’s Poverty: New Evidence from Italian Data
CHILD Working Paper 47/2016 (old version)
I use data from the ISTAT Birth Sample Surveys and I adopt and compare different specifications of a 2SLS model using twin births as an instrument to estimate the causal impact of number of children on maternal labor supply and subjective poverty. Results show a significant negative impact on the probability of being employed or active and a significant positive impact on perceived financial difficulties in the short run. Results are stronger for younger and lower educated mothers; women with temporary contracts in the private sector or self-employed are more likely to leave the labor market.
