Lesson 1/22 - 19th September 2016
English Alphabet
For the pronunciation of the English alphabet please watch this short video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KjezV-lK4s
Verb to be
Affirmative:
Singular:
I am - I'm, you are - you're, he is - he's, she is - she's, it is - it's
Plural:
we are - we're, you are - you're, they are - they're
As you will notice we use "you" for both "tu" and "vous" - there is no difference in English
Negative:
We usually abbreviate not to n't except with I - it's too difficult to say I amn't
Singular:
I'm not, you aren't, he isn't, she isn't, it isn't
Plural:
we aren't, you aren't, they aren't
Note that is can be abbreviated to 's after any word but are can only be abbreviated to 're after the words we, you and they - we're, you're, they're

To make questions with the verb to be, just inverse the subject and the verb to be:
Am I? Are you? Is he? Is she? Is it? Are we? Are you? Are they?
WH words: where, when, who, why, what, which, how, etc.
Any WH word comes first before the rest of the question, eg Where are they? How are you?

Affirmative:
to play - I play, you play, he, she, it plays, we play, you play, they play
I play tennis, he plays football - remember the s on the end of the third person singular (he, she, it)
After the sibilant sounds -s, -sh, -ch and do/go we need to add -es, eg finishes, does, goes
The 3rd person singular of the verb to have is has - he, she, it has
After a y preceded by a consonant we change the y into i and add -es, eg study - studies
Frequency adverbs (always, never, often, usually, sometimes) are used with the present simple and come after the verb to be, eg I am never late, or before the main verb, eg I sometimes go to the cinema.

I don't play tennis, he doesn't play football

Present perfect
The present perfect (simple) tense is formed with the present tense of the verb to have (I have, you have, he, she, it has, we, you, they have) plus the past participle of the verb.
This tense indicates either than an action was completed at some point in the past or that the action extends to the present.
