Dai studied medicine at the University of Hong Kong in the 1980s, and received his Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of London. He obtained his Postgraduate Diploma in Education with distinction in coursework (English) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dai was a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, and worked as a proofreader, editor, translator, registered teacher, private tutor, administrative assistant, etc. He is the author of the webpages Changingchangingchanging and Dai Dai's Dynamic Domain.
