Newsletter
This is the first Newsletter for this site dedicated in tribute to the late much
lamented eternal soul of Kirst MacColl
It’s to be of frankly an indeterminable quantity and to be of ditto frequency,
this 1st is simply to explain how this site came about, and why its here
The rational is for a simple but hopefully not pedantic intro to Kirsty MacColl,
for all those who had been unfortunate enough to have missed out on her
inestimable qualities.
As well as serving as a tribute to Kirsty for all her present fans.
The title of the site The One & Only is actually a song from her album Electric
Landlady. From anyone else that title could appear egocentric, but it’s actually a
reflection on too many failed relationships, leading to a possible conclusion of
finding no one to relate to, with only herself to rely on.
As with so many of Kristy’s songs I personally relate to that scenario.
I also concurred with a personal reflection of Kirsty read online, relating to her
feelings of deepening disillusion with all things political in these islands
combined with a general depression with life in general.
I was greatly heartened with her finding herself personally and musically in Cuba.
I felt really pleased she at last found happiness, and in consequence had no
intention of making this site a reflection of her melancholy.
Rather more a cheerful and happy celebration of Kirsty MacColl and of her
enduring soul and musical legacy.
Hence the Home Page photo, located via a promo for Kirsty’s Latin based album
Tropical Brainstorm. It wasn’t actually that big but it’s such a wonderfully
colourful image that I just had to include it and expanded it to fill as much
space as possible.
The British music establishment is so conservative in its commerciality that its
abiding tendency is to pigeon hole artists, expecting them to conform to its
own perceived norms leaving little room for originality.
Something that remained for so long a bane of Kirsty’s musical life, leaving all
too much of her musical legacy described in terms of singles that managed to
squeeze through the cracks and get played on air.
By music hacks who could only consult their playlist, and didn’t know of
anything beyond their own rather limited musical horizons.
As a fan I feel the best way to know an artist is to listen to their music, which
is why the Music Page, relates directly to Kirsty’s actual albums.
The Campaign Page has the open letter Kirsty’s Mum Jean MacColl sent to the
Mexican millionaire responsible for Kirsty’s death Gonzalez Nova.
He owns and was responsible for the boat his son piloted that hit and killed
Kirsty, and was aboard it with his family at the time.
Nova admitted his culpability then but later persuaded his employee Cen Lam to
claim it for the purpose of the police investigations.
Nova refused to meet Jean and she had to pass the letter on via Government
officials.
The News Page contains an article from a Mexican newspaper giving more
direct coverage of the accident as well as the ceremony for Kirsty at the
scene, the picture link used is of the wreath laid there.
The Links Page contains direct links to the campaigning Justice for Kirsty site,
the Yahoo fan group site, and other related sites, including an email link for the
Newsletter.
The Newsletter is deliberately designed to mirror the actual site including the
same page links leading directly to the main site. The Newsletter's name La
Casa is Spanish for The Home
