Field Experience

I've worked on a variety of projects, mostly with birds, in the US, tropical Pacific, and New Zealand. Some of my experience is summarized below; see my CV for more details and specific positions held.

Bird surveying and identification:

Shorebird and waterfowl surveys in the US (East Coast, central, and Alaska)
Songbird surveys in the tropical Pacific
Tern colony censuses on the US East Coast

Breeding bird monitoring:

Songbirds in New Zealand forests
Gulls, shorebirds, waterfowl, and sparrows on the tundra in arctic Alaska
Kittiwakes and murres on cliffs in south-central Alaska
Puffins and storm-petrels in burrows in south-central Alaska
Crows in tropical forest
Common, Roseate, & Least Terns, Piping Plovers, and American Oystercatchers on beaches and islands of the US East Coast

Bird trapping:

Mist-netting shorebirds and songbirds
Bow-net traps for shorebirds
Box and clap traps for NZ robins
Walk-in traps for terns
Noose mat traps for gulls and oystercatchers

Bird banding, tagging, and handling:

Banded (including color bands), bled, and measured shorebirds and songbirds
Assisted with attaching backpack transmitters to Glaucous Gulls
Measured, bled, and took feather samples from Glaucous Gull chicks
Banded and measured Common Tern, Royal Tern, puffin, guillemot, storm-petrel, and pelican chicks; Common Tern and American Oystercatcher adults
Measured and floated (to age) eggs of shorebirds, waterfowl, songbirds, and gulls
Incidentally handled a variety of birds (from songbirds to large seabirds)
