I am also an Associate Editor at the Journal of Comparative Economics and Research Fellow at IZA. My areas of research and teaching interests are political economy, economic development, and economic growth. I am particularly interested in understanding the causes and consequences of conflict and violence. My work has been published or is forthcoming in the American Economic Review, AEJ: Applied Economics, Journal of Economic Growth, Economic Journal, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Public Economics, and Economics Letters.
See Interview by the International Economic Association FEATURED ECONOMIST, OCTOBER 2022
I will be on sabbatical during the calendar year 2025. Due to family commitments, I cannot be away from Santiago for the entire year, but I will be visiting at least 4 different institutions for about a month each: Université de Laussane and Geneva Graduate Institute (March 2025); Southern Methodist University (May 2025); Universitá Degli Studi di Napoli Parthenope; and Johns Hopkins University (SAIS). I would be happy to visit other institutions for seminars as well.
