Examination:
Emergency treatment:
Determine the MOI (method of injury).
Look for point tenderness.
Is there swelling.
Leave the patient still AND DO NOT MOVE THE LIMB. Moving the limb or patient with a broken bone could result in damage to the surrounding blood vessels and impair the blood flow. Only in those "Walking Wounded" who are already holding a wrist or arm up against their chest (possible shoulder/clavicle fracture), you can help support the limb to keep it from moving while you wait for help to arrive (see below).
Unless sprain is obvious from the above exam, call 911.
Splinting should only be done by those with medical training or in "back country" situation (see Wilderness Concerns).
In the "Walking Wounded" ONLY who are moving above, have them sit still and support the injured limb if need be. Otherwise, DO NOT MOVE PATIENT.
For wrist injuries, help support wrist in position of least pain
For shoulder injuries, help support arm as positioned in the photo
