Some additions to "Saladin Consoles Baldwin IV over the Death of His Father." Crusades 15 (2016): 27-33. [Google Books]
I present here an alternate edition of the text of Saladin's letter to Baldwin. This text differs from the text that appears on p. 32 in the following ways: (i) It is preceded by the basmala formula ("In the name of God the Merciful and the Compassionate") which al-Qalqashandī regularly omits from many of the letters which he cites. (ii) The text has been broken up and certain words have been marked in boldface to emphasize the rhyme. (iii) For the sake of comparison, the text has been placed side by side with Saladin's other letter of condolence, mentioned on p. 28, sent to an unnamed emir after Nūr al-Dīn's death. Certain words have been highlighted in color in order to showcase the similarities between the two letters. A word between curly brackets is spurious and should probably be omitted.
I have now added a modified version of my English translation printed in Crusades. The translation appears following the alternate edition of the Arabic text. The translation is set beside the Arabic text which is repeated. Words marked in yellow signify places where I made changes to my printed translation.
