A simple drag-and-drop program which doesn't require a download.

Great for beginners and basic designs.

Blender | free download

A free, open-source CAD program which can also be used for animation.

Google SketchUp | free download

A beginner-friendly program which allows users to transform 2D sketches into 3D models.

Slicing Programs

Slicers are used to break 3D models into 2D layers for the printing process.

Cura | free download

The slicing program used for all prints at the EDH Library 3D Print Lab.

Use at home to see print times and structural weaknesses.

Remember to select Printrbot Simple Metal as your printer model.

Drawing Programs

Want to add a logo or design to your print? .SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic) files can be converted to 3D models in 123D Design. These programs can create .SVG files and convert simple .JPEGs as well.

Draw and edit .SVG files in this free program.

GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) | free download

A free alternative to Photoshop, this is an all-purpose drawing and editing program which is also able to export .SVG files.

3D Scanning Programs

Scan anything, including objects around your house, your face, or even your pet (if it sits still long enough) to make a 3D model, ready to print.

123D Catch | free smartphone application

Use your phone's camera as a 3D scanner.

Original designs created by EDH Library patrons will be placed at the front of the printing queue, but if you're looking for somewhere to start or an existing design to modify, these websites have thousands of print files available for free download.
