The Early Businesses of Edna, Missouri (now Scott City)
To the Editor of The Jumplicute, Scott City, Missouri
Dear Editor:
The years 1905-1906 and 1907 were busy ones in our towns.
The clang of saws and bang of hammers were heard all around as the building of homes and business places were being rushed to completion. The homes were new and nice and the people were happy. Business came from Gray's Point to locate here. There was a fine jewelry store owned by Mr. Pickhorn. Emil Steck was a teller in the bank located in the Emil Hillman building. Then there was a big general store called A & D Schiefer. (Ed and Dana Schiefer) The owners came from Indiana. The Bollinger butcher shop and Weilputz Bakery were some of the other businesses in thetown. The little white church was up on a hill and the school was held in the city hall building and taught by Lois Williams*.
There were doctors who came to our town. A young doctor by the name of Shell Hutton** came from Kelso. Also, Dr. G. S. Cannon came from Grays Point to practice here. Dr. Cannon became a leader in the community and many will remember him. (Dr. Cannon served on the school board and he also served as mayor.)
· Lois Williams Smith was Edna’s older sister. There is a photo on page 11.
** Shell Hutton ran for coroner on the Republican ticket in 1904 (The Kicker, 9/24/1904, p.4)
News from Edna mentions Hutton and Cannon in “From Edna” article on page 8.
Sincerely, Edna Drexler
