Modi delivers on pledge of ice-cream with Oly squad
As promised by him in his virtual interaction with the Indian players before their departure for the Tokyo Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hosted the Indian Olympics athletes and medal winners for breakfast here at his 7 Lok Kalyan Marg residence. “Churma” and ice-cream were part of the fare on the breakfast table at Modi’s home.
By far the largest Indian Olympic contingent with 126 members, it won seven medals which included first-ever Indian Gold in track & field event by javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. It was the country’s best ever show at the Olympics.
As promised Modi had “churma” with Chopra, latter’s favourite and ice-cream with badminton ace and Bronze winner PV Sindhu
Sindhu had also brought her Silver medal won in the previous Rio Olympics along with her.
Before Sindhu embarked upon her Olympic journey, the Prime Minister had promised her that they will have her favourite ice-cream together after she wins a medal.
Olympic players, including wrestler Bajrang Punia and others, could be seen enjoying the felicitation ceremony in the pictures.
Posing with a hockey stick, the Prime Minister could be seen with the entire team of Men’s Hockey Team which created history at Tokyo Olympics by winning a medal (Bronze) after 41 years beating Germany.
The team also presented Modi with autographed hockey stick.
Apart from Chopra’s gold, India won two silver medals and four bronze medals at the Tokyo Olympics. The silver medals came from weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya. The bronze medals were won by shuttler PV Sindhu, the men’s hockey team, boxer Lovlina Borgohain and wrestler Bajrang Punia.
Modi, who had applauded the Indian athletes’ tremendous show during the 75th Independence Day celebration at the Red Fort on Sunday, was seen talking to Sindhu, who became only the second Indian and first woman to win two Olympic medals.
The members of the India men’s hockey team talked with Modi, who was seen examining a hockey stick.
Vinesh Phogat, who has been suspended by the WFI for indiscipline, was also present along with young Anshu Malik, Seema Bisla and coach Jagmander Singh.
