Iftikhar Hussain
Associate Professor
Department of Economics
University of Sussex
Welcome to my website. I am Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Sussex. My research focuses primarily on the economics of education, with particular interests in school accountability, governance, performance evaluation, teacher labour markets, and the role of information in shaping educational decisions and outcomes.
My work uses applied econometric methods and large scale administrative data to examine how education policies and institutional incentives influence the behaviour of schools, parents, and education professionals. My wider research interests include school choice and educational competition, parental investments in children's education, and educational interventions in international settings, including Sweden and China. More recently, my research has focused on early childhood outcomes, drawing on population-level datasets to investigate the factors shaping children's early development.
My research has been published in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Public Economics, The Economic Journal, Journal of Urban Economics, and Journal of Human Resources.
Alongside my academic research, I contribute to education policy discussions in the UK. I have served on an expert panel advising Ofsted on school inspection methodology and have given oral evidence to the UK House of Commons Education Select Committee. My work has received coverage in major national media outlets.
Prior to joining Sussex, I earned my PhD in Economics from University College London and undertook postdoctoral research at Oxford University.
