The Aquatic Animal Ecology Research Group has been at Durham since 1992, led by Martyn Lucas. We have developed an international reputation for research on animal spatial ecology in aquatic habitats, including fish migration and passage and impacts of barriers, water diversions and habitat suitability in freshwater. We also actively pursue research in fisheries ecology, behavioural ecology, evolutionary ecology, conservation biology and invasion ecology. We collaborate widely with a variety of national and international research institutes and industry.

Citizen Science Project / Barrier Tracker app
It is part of the AMBER project. By using the Barrier Tracker app people help to complete the European Barrier Atlas, a key tool for policy makers, water managers and conservationists. Using the app in the helps with gathering of more data and greater spatial coverage of records than would have been possible using conventional surveys. Typical data gathered includes a photo of the barrier, the location of the barrier and the height of the barrier.
