Chapter Summary:
In chapter 2, you will learn about the process of special education. You will learn about the prereferral intervention process as well as Response to Intervention (RTI. In this chapter, you will also learn how to collaborate with other stakeholders in the school to support all students. Additionally, Individualized Education Program (IEP) will be explained in great detail. You will also learn about the least restrictive environment and how it supports students. This chapter also emphasizes the importance of inclusive education for all students.
Learning Outcomes:
• Identify and describe the function of each step of the special education process.
• Define disproportionate representation, identify groups that are over and underrepresented in special education, and explain why this is problematic.
• Compare and contrast the three teaming models.
• List the required components of an individualized education program.
• Explain how the least restrictive environment for a given student is not necessarily the regular classroom.
• Identify several arguments for and against full inclusion.
• Name the most crucial variable in the effectiveness of special education.
Reflection Questions:
1. What factors must the IEP team take into consideration when determining what the least restrictive environment is for an individual student?
2. What are the advantages of using response to intervention (RTI) in the prereferral process?
3. What are the best ways to monitor student’s progress towards IEP objectives?
Chapter Activity:
1. Complete the RTI (Part 1) An Overview Module: http://iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu/module/rti01-overview/.
Answer the following questions:
What are the two options for identifying students with learning disabilities? Briefly summarize each one.
List at least four benefits of using an RTI approach with struggling students.
Compton is a first-grade student at Rosa Parks Elementary School. His teacher, having administered a universal screening measure, has identified Compton as a struggling reader. Name and explain the first step in the RTI approach that she should consider when trying to help Compton. Keep in mind that Rosa Parks uses the standard protocol approach.
Assume that your recommendation for Question 3 was implemented; unfortunately, Compton’s progress continues to be insufficient. Name and explain the next step in the RTI approach.
2. Watch the video, What is an IEP?
