vocabulary

Most weeks I teach two to four roots, prefixes, or suffixes from Latin or Greek. Students and I identify English words that include those roots, prefixes, or suffixes. In our classroom, the Latin roots are always identified in red and the Greek in green. The record of what we learn is on this webpage.

Week of March 18--

  • nox, noct = night. English words include equinox, nocturnal.

  • phobia = fear. English words include hydrophobia, arachnophobia, claustrophobia.

Week of March 11--

  • vit = life. English words include vitamin, vital.

  • auto = self. English words include automobile, automatic, autobiography.

Week of January 21--

  • aud = hear, listen. English words include audio, auditory, audition; auditorium.

  • mega = large. English words include megaphone, megabyte.

Week of January 7--

  • cycl = circular. English words include bicycle, tricycle, unicycle, motorcycle, cycle, recycle, cyclone.

  • vid, vis = see. English words include video, vision, visible, invisible.

Week of December 10--

  • cur = run. English words include current, curriculum, courier.

  • ped = foot. English words include pedestrian, pedal, pedestal.

Week of December 3--

  • duc, duct = lead. English words include conduct, deduction, duct, induction.

  • pol, polis = city. English words include politics Annapolis, Minneapolis, Indianapolis.

Week of November 27--

  • dem = people. English words include democracy, democratic, demographics.

  • cred = believe. English words include credible, incredible, creed.

Week of November 5--

  • vers, vert = turn. English words include convert, reverse, conversation, advertise.

  • dict, dic = say or tell. English words include dictation, dictator, indicate, edict, contradict, dictionary.

Week of October 22--

  • flex, flect = bend. English words include flex, flexion, flection, inflection, deflect, reflect, reflection.

  • geo = earth. English words include geography, geology, geothermal, geode.

  • scope = watch, see. English words include microscope, scope, telescope, microscope.

Week of October 15--

  • stru, struct = build. English words include construct, construction, instruct, instruction, instructor, structure, destruct, destruction.

  • scribe, script = write. English words include describe, description, subscribe, subscription, post script [p.s.], Scripture, scribe, script.

  • therm = heat, hot. English words include thermal, thermostat, Thermos, thermometer.

  • tract = to pull, drag, or draw. English words include attract, attraction, attractive, tractor, subtract, distract, contraction, contract, detract.

  • hydro = water. English words include hydrate, dehydrated, rehydrate, hydroelectricity, hydroplane, hydraulics.

  • micro = small. English words include microwave, microscope, microchip, Microsoft, micrometer, microphone.

  • form = to shape. English words include inform, reform, uniform, deform, transform, formation, form

  • bio = life. English words include biography, autobiography, biology

Week of September 17--

  • port = carry. English words include portable, airport, support, Portland, port, import, export, seaport

  • tele= distant. English words include telephone, telegraph, telegram, television

Week of September 10--

  • graph = writing. English words include paragraph, graph, photograph, phonograph, autograph, telegraph, biography, geography.

  • meter = measure. English words include meter, centimeter, millimeter, metric, barometer.

  • photo = light. English words include photograph, photosynthesis.

  • rupt = break, burst. English words include erupt, disrupt, interrupt, rupture.

Week of September 4--

  • bene = good. English words include benefit, beneficial, benevolent, benefactor.

  • cent = 100. English words include cent, centimeter, century, percent.

  • spect = look at. English words include inspect, spectator, spectacles, inspector.

  • phone = sound. English words include telephone, smartphone, headphones, phonograph, phonogram, phonics.
