The app implements the linear Support Vector Machine (SVM) decision boundary established by our paper "Forecasting bank failures and stress testing: A machine learning approach" Gogas, Papadimitriou, and Agrapetidou, 2018 International Journal of Forecasting.

By evaluating more than 1,400 U.S. banks, and testing all 5,500 US banks, the original study discovered that out of 144 initial financial variables, just two specific ratios yield an astonishing 99.22% overall forecasting accuracy:
Tier 1 (Core) Risk-Based Capital Ratio (T1CRC): A benchmark for a bank's foundational capital adequacy cushion.
Total Interest Expense / Total Interest Income (TIE): A reflection of structural financial leverage and gross margin distress.
Direct Input Extraction: Users can input four raw metrics straight from any bank's Balance Sheet and Income Statement.
Dynamic Feature Scaling: The app normalizes real-world data to a uniform $[-1, 1]$ mathematical domain to mirror the paper's data processing pipeline.
Hyperplane Boundary Visualization: Built completely in HTML5 Canvas, the app renders a real-time, interactive graph plotting the bank’s placement relative to the optimized SVM decision line.
Geometric Distance to Default d(B): Rather than outputting standard statistics, it calculates the precise perpendicular distance to the boundary, offering a quantitative "safety margin" to stress-test how much economic shock a solvent bank can withstand before defaulting.
