Duncan Ivison

I teach political philosophy at the University of Sydney. I did my BA (hons) at McGill, in Montreal, where I grew up, and my M.Sc. and PhD at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

I have also served in a number of academic leadership roles at Sydney, including Head of the School of Humanities (2007-9), Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (2010-15), and most recently,  Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) from 2015-2022.  From 1 August 2024, I will be President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester.

This site contains a selection of recent and forthcoming papers. For a comprehensive list of publications see my University of Sydney website. You can check out my Phil Papers  and  academia.edu sites too.

I am also passionate about writing for broader audiences  and bringing the insights and approaches  of political philosophers to bear on  major issues of the day. You can find some of these contributions under 'Public Philosophy' in the menu to the left.
