The Bravo Awards are presented at the TCWSE Annual Conference for exemplary practitioners, innovative programs, and initiatives that promote community and parental involvement. Dr. Smalskas was recognized for development of the following new programs for Sherman ISD:
Bearcat Collegiate Program, the behavioral intervention program known as BLOOM, new communications plan, #MaroonMania, online enrollment, district PTA council, increasing athletic participation, and CCMR programs.
Lions Club International Award – Grass Roots Lion for supporting Making A Difference for implementing Lions Quest in grades 3-5.
Texas School Business Nationally Recognized Program - Created a nationally recognized Aviation program winning awards with TASB and with Texas School Business.
Earned all 7 TEA School Distinctions in 1 year – First high school in Irving ISD to earn all 7 TEA distinctions in one year, ranking as one of the top 1.9% high schools in the nation.
Superintendents Shining Star 2014 – Award recipient for high school principal developing innovative programs.
The Bearcat Collegiate Program (click) is designed to provide students with opportunities to explore their academic interests while jump starting their college career.
Through Sherman ISD’s partnership with Grayson College, the Bearcat Collegiate Program gives our students the option to take dual credit college courses or pursue an Associates of Science degree while attending Sherman High School.

To support K-2 teachers with students who have egregious behaviors, I developed a program called BLOOM (Behavioral learning opportunities to Overcome Misbehaviors). Using the Boys Town Specialized Classroom model, K-2 misbehaviors decreased 22% in one year. Click HERE to review the plan.
Developed a new counseling department focus using the American School of Counselor Association framework and competencies, earning Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas award.
During my tenure as a high school principal my high school was ranked as a top 1.9% schools in Texas leading the state assessments.
First campus principal in 14 years to develop a Mascot selection committee to select campus mascot
Brought the TSI (Texas Success Initiative) Accuplacer College Placement test to high school campuses for first time.
Increased AP test scores participation and won the National AP District of the Year - Irving ISD
Increased AP College Board Participation by increasing counselor usage of PSAT Potential
Increased overall district attendance rate by 3-5% pending campus
Decrease discipline referrals by 12%
Increased National Merit Scholars (doubled our number in one year)
Increased graduation rate with the lowest dropout rate below state average in a very at risk high school
Developed and institutionalized a dropout prevention program for at risk students increasing graduation rate by 3%.
Designed and created a non-traditional blended learning style school for at risk students
