Introduction: This lesson plan offers an innovative opportunity for students to explore expanding fields within STEM, particularly in proteomics and mass spectrometry. By introducing concepts such as post-translational protein modifications and the role of mass spectrometry in protein analysis, this plan exposes students to advanced topics typically outside the scope of traditional classroom lessons. Our developed lesson plan aims to spark interest in STEM careers, helping students discover potential pathways they might not have previously considered.
Intended Audience: This lesson plan is designed for high school students in grades 9 through 12. While older students will benefit more, as they are nearing college and career decisions, younger students can also engage with the material and participate in the activities.
Learning Time: The activity is designed to be completed in one class period, approximately 50 minutes.
Materials: The lesson plan incorporates two YouTube videos, each paired with comprehension questions. The first video covers post-translational protein modification, and the second explains mass spectrometry and its application in protein analysis.
This lesson plan includes leaning objectives, video links, and answer keys. It can viewed only by registered instructors on OER (Open Educational Resources) Commons at https://oercommons.org/courseware/lesson/132271. However, the students handouts below are accessible to everyone.
