2017 The 1st Prize Award Winner for Construction Safety

in the Hong Kong CIC (Construction Industry Council) Construction Innovation Award 2017, given to an innovative technology developed in the past 2 years named as “Bio-Inspired Anti-Vibration Exoskeleton”, which is a technical breakthrough effectively helping construction workers to avoid occupational diseases in operation of demolition tools.

The award was delivered in the Hong Kong CIC Construction Innovation Award Presentation Ceremony with an award presentation on 15 Dec 2017, at JW Marriot Hong Kong (Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Hong Kong).

v This is an important once-2-year event in HK, with an awarding cash: 150,000 HKDs and the CEO of HKSAR supposed to attend each timev The BIAVE is one of the three first prizes among 17 Finalists of more than 120 submissionsv This time is witnessed by Mr Matthew CHEUNG Kin-Chung, GBM, GBS, JP, Acting Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), CIC Chairman Mr Chan Ka-Kui, SBS, JP, and an international selection panel.v The BIAVE solved the problem in a most efficient and effective way compared with all existing passive and active control methods. v The problem is a very critical one existing in the area for many years. v https://www.polyu.edu.hk/me/zh-HK/Staffevents/detail/201

2017 EASD Senior Research Prize in Europe

Dr Jing received the Senior Research Prize in the area of development of methodologies for structural dynamics due to “his important contributions for the analysis and design of nonlinear systems”.

The European Association for Structural Dynamics (EASD) awards Senior and Junior Research Prizes every three years to recognize outstanding contributions in three areas of structural dynamics (methodology development, computation or application). The prize is awarded via Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Müller, President of the European Association for Structural Dynamics, Lehrstuhl für Baumechanik, Chair of Structural Mechanics, Technische Universität München during the EURODYN 2017 – X International Conference on Structural Dynamics, 10-14 Sep 2017 in Rome, Italy.

v This is a prestigious once-3-year event in Europe in Structural Dynamics, and vacant awards are seen from time to time;v It is the first time to award a Chinese scholar in the past 30 yearsv Only two Senior Research Prizes this year, and at most 3 senior research prizes in 3 categories each time (once 3 years);v 1000+ submissions and 600+ registered participants from the world in the conference.v http://www.polyu.edu.hk/me/en-US/Staffevents/detail/191v https://www.polyu.edu.hk/cpa/excel/en/201711/achievements/a2/index.html

2017 US TechConnect Innovation Award

For Passive anti-vibration structures in TechConnect World-National Innovation Summit May 13-17, 2017, Washington DC. It is recognized as the top 20% of all submitted technologies as ranked by the TechConnect Corporate & Investment Partner Committee.

The TechConnect Innovation Awards selects the top early-stage innovations from around the world through an industry-review process of the top 20% of annually submitted technologies into the TechConnect National Innovation Summit. v UGC chairman of HK SAR Mr Carlson Tong delivered to us a congratulation letter via PolyU council chair and president on 8 June 2017; v PolyU is the only awardee from Hong Kong, and snatches 3 out of the 26 global awards presented to non-US-federal-funded innovations across the world.v It is the first time for a Hong Kong higher education institution to receive the awards, along with other global-renowned research institutes (including US NASA, National Labs, Georgia Tech, Princeton Lab, UCLA, Australia National U etc), at the TechConnect World Innovation Conference and Expo, the largest multi-sector summit for supporting the development and commercialization of innovations. v The annual event held in the US gathers more than 4,000 technology innovators, ventures, industrial partners and investors from over 70 countries.v http://www.polyu.edu.hk/me/en-US/Staffevents/detail/184 v https://www.polyu.edu.hk/web/en/media/media_releases/index_id_6416.html v https://www.polyu.edu.hk/cpa/excel/en/201705/achievements/a1/index.html v https://www.polyu.edu.hk/cpa/milestones/en/201709/research_innovation/technology/bio_inspired_x_structure_revolutionises_anti_vibra/index.html

The research work on fuzzy active control of vehicle suspension systems from Dr XJ Jing’s research group received The 2016 Andrew P. Sage Best Transactions Paper Award, which was just announced during the 2016 IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (SMC 2016) held at Hotel Intercontinental Budapest during 9-12 Oct 2016.

The award is to recognize the authors of the best paper published annually in the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics (SMC) (established in 1998), which was funded by the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society through an endowment administered by the IEEE Foundation. The basis for judging the award is according to the Originality, technical merit, potential impact to the SMCS Field of Interest, and presentation quality.

The IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics is the flagship conference of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. It provides an international forum for researchers and practitioners to report up-to-the-minute innovation and development, summarize state-of-the-art, and exchange ideas and advances in all aspects of systems science and engineering, human machine systems, and cybernetics. The SMC2016 is dedicated to the Hungarian born John von Neumann “a Pioneer of Modern Computer Science”

v This is the highest honour awarded to authors annually in the IEEE SMC society.v The paper has 195 citations ever since published online in late 2014v http://www.polyu.edu.hk/me/en-US/Staffevents/detail/174
