Apparently Drive lets "Windows explorer" crash on windows XP for some users. There doesn't seem to be a definitive solution yet... but these are some possibilities:
1. Disable sync of google docs files
1. Right-click on the "Google drive" system try icon
2. "Preferences"
3. Turn off the option "Sync Google Docs files" (Google Docs files: the Google Document, Spreadsheet etc.)

2. Disable you virus scanner
This is not a long term solution, or not even a short term, but for some users this seems to work.
3. Remove the "System file" attribute from the desktop.ini file in "My documents" folder
1. Click "Start" and "Run" or combination of keys WinLogo + R or click on Windows Logo
2. Type CMD.EXE and hit ENTER.
3. In the black screen that appeared, type CD %USERPROFILE% and hit ENTER.
4. Type CD "My Documents" (with the quotes) and hit ENTER. Note that if your Windows is eg. Portuguese, should type CD "Meus Documentos", etc..
5. Type ATTRIB -S DESKTOP.INI and hit ENTER.
6. Now you can hopefully use the Google Drive folder without problems
