To understand biology we must understand that all living things are made of cells, so how cells work is fundamental. In this course, we will look at features shared by all cells. We will also look at some of the unique features particular to specific cell types. We will introduce the assembly and role of cellular macro-molecules how cells get and use energy, conveyance of materials across membranes and communication between cells. We will study movement, growth and division of cells and look at performance of specialized functions. In addition to this survey of what is known about cell structure and function, we will be highlighting what isn't known yet and some of the properties of stem cells and cancer cells. We will discuss the evidence that leads to our current hypotheses for how cells work and you will gain experience evaluating data. In lab, you will gain experience with manual lab skills, improve your powers of observation, gain experience with experimental design, data analysis and interpretation, and learn to use research equipment. Overall, this course will increase your knowledge and understanding of cell biology and improve your skills in critical thinking, hypothesis making and testing, quantitative analysis, written and oral communication, and group work.
