total knee replacement(TKR)

Total Knee Replacement or TKR is a joint replacement surgery in which worn out or diseased knee joint is replaced with artificial implant

Benifits include

1) near total pain relief especially in patients with eroded joint having severe pain (e.g.) osteoarthritis;Rhematoid or secondary arthritis due to any cause

2) correction of deformity: the abnormal posture and gait of patient is corrected to a significant extent improving walking distance of patients

Limitations:

1) patient may squat with newer designs but patient is generally discouraged to do so.

2) surgery being a complex one; requires expetise and experience on part of surgeon

3) life of joint surface ranges from 10-15 yrs ; may require replacement after that.

4) implant bieng non living tissue always have a small probabilty of getting infected.
