About

Mas (Masquerade) is a processionary art form specific to the Caribbean.

With 15 years experience in prop and street theatre production, Deajar-David Làzer has recently started to build and design costumes using techniques specific to carnival in Trinidad. Wire-bending is an art form that has been in decline on the islands over the past decade so the study and exploration of this art form is crucial to its survival.

All the costumes designed by David Làzer strive to remain true to the style of Mas and Samba. Where possible, an alternative material is used in place of real feathers and that one element (mainly the headpiece) is built with the technique of wire-bending.

Frontline, Backline, Junior, Queen and King Costumes are placed respectively in a procession and maintain the same design theme throughout. Masqueraders dance behind a sound system playing Soca, Calypso, Dancehall, Steel pan and other popular forms of live or playback music and sometimes have a DJ/MC or dance leader encouraging the masqueraders into the festive mood.
