Dr. C. P. Paul
Addtive Manufacturing Expert & Technology Translation Enabler
Dr. C. P. Paul leads pioneering research in Additive Manufacturing (AM) and Technology Translation at the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore. He has been recognized among the top 2% most influential scientists worldwide for six consecutive years by Stanford University (USA), as published by Elsevier B.V.
With over two decades of experience, Dr. Paul’s work spans the entire AM spectrum—from system development to industrial applications. His research focuses on next-generation additive manufacturing systems and processes, emphasizing advanced materials, innovative product design, and in-depth modeling and simulation. His group also develops in-situ and ex-situ characterization tools to advance the field.
Dr. Paul has played a pivotal role in promoting AM technology across India by collaborating with national laboratories and premier academic institutions. He has significantly contributed to extending RRCAT’s indigenously developed Laser Additive Manufacturing (LAM) facilities for experimental and industrial use. His scholarly contributions include 26 book chapters, over 150 publications in reputed international journals, and a widely adopted textbook on Additive Manufacturing for students, faculty, and practicing engineers.
The LAM facilities—encompassing both Directed Energy Deposition (DED) and Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) technologies—are now open to industries and academia under RRCAT’s incubation services. The LAM-DED technology has already been successfully transferred to six industrial partners, including startups and MSEs.
Currently, Dr. Paul leads RRCAT’s Technology Transfer Cell and serves as the Founding Director and Head of AIC π-Hub, RRCAT, where he fosters innovation-driven partnerships between research institutions, industries, and startups. He also serves as Professor at Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a Deemed University under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India, supervising 15 Ph.D. and 40 M.Tech. scholars.
Dr. Paul holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Laser Additive Manufacturing (2005). He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Vikram University, Ujjain, and began his career as a Design Engineer in professionally managed public sector companies. Between 2006 and 2008, he served as a Research Professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada.
Over his career, Dr. Paul’s contributions have been recognized through numerous national and international awards, including:
Homi Bhabha Science & Technology Award (2017) — the highest DAE recognition for excellence in Science, Technology, and Engineering
DAE Group Achievement Award (2015) for Indigenous Development of India’s First Metal LAM Machines (DED & PBF technologies)
NSERC-Discovery Research Grant (2007), Government of Canada
Ontario Centre of Excellence Travel Award (2006), Government of Ontario
Dr. Paul is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), a Life Member of the Indian Laser Association (ILA), and an Associate Member of the American Society of Metals (ASM).
His visionary leadership continues to advance India’s capabilities in metal additive manufacturing, bridging the gap between research innovation and industrial application through effective technology translation.
