Academic Journals

Nature and Structure of the Academic Journals

In mathematics when new material is written it is submitted to a journal. Two mathematicians review the submission to decide if it is correct and to comment on its style and presentation. They make a recommendation to the editor of the journal who decides if it is going to be published.

To aid in your learning of mathematics we will do the same thing in this course. Each student will be required to produce a complete solution to three problems written in tex and a student will referee the problem before each test. The journal will be due to the referee exactly one week before the exam. The paper must consist of three proofs and must have all necessary definitions and examples must be given for each theorem. The prose must be clearly written.

A lecture will be given in the beginning of the semester to teach the class how to use the type setting system tex. A sample tex file can be found on this site. The solutions must be complete and instructive. Namely, nothing must be left out. Some small introduction, all necessary definitions and an example for each theorem should be given. On the bottom of this page there is a link to a writing guide. Be sure to follow all of the advice given on this page. There is also links to two sample tex files and the pdf files that they produce.

The referees should ensure that the author's solution is correct, that the presentation is clear and that the solution is instructive. A checklist for referees is given as a link on the bottom of this page. The referees should take no more than a day to give their suggestions to the author and the author. The final solution should be given to the editor together with the written reports of the referees (these can be hand written) on the day of the exam or earlier.
