A HONENS STORY | Mini-Documenary
“It was Honens’ inaugural Piano Competition, which changed my life.”—Dmitry Nesterov
Twenty-five years ago, Dmitry Nesterov walked out onto the Jack Singer Concert Hall stage for the first time. 110 Pianists from around the world auditioned for the inaugural Honens International Piano Competition in 1992. Five pianists, including Dmitry Nesterov, were named Laureates for the Competition. In 2018, he will celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday as a proud Calgarian, all because he took part in the competition.
Dmitry was born and raised in Russia but he travelled all the way to Canada to compete. After the competition, the political and economic turmoil back home in Russia made him nervous but the competition enabled him and his wife Olga to stay in Canada and build a life here in Calgary, Alberta.
