DMDD stands for Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder. DMDD is a mental disorder that is typically assigned to children with severe irritability (APA, 2013). A child with DMDD will have frequent temper outbursts when faced with frustration. An outburst from a child with DMDD can be verbal or behavioral. Children with DMDD may have difficulty controlling and containing their emotions. Because children with DMDD have difficulty regulating their moods they may display aggression towards objects, other people or themselves (APA, 2013).
DMDD does not only affect the child with the disorder. As the child exhibits frequent irritability it can have a great affect on family members, teachers and peers.Children with DMDD have increased risk of developing antisocial personality disorder, substance abuse or psychiatric illness as adults (Ramires, Godinho & Goodman, 2017).
