EnACTed project is currently one of the main supporters of our Dual Language program. The project, like the acronym represents, aims to engage and advance community-based teacher development. Through our collaboration parents and teachers come together to share their perspectives on teaching and learning languages and cultures. We are so grateful for this team continued support.
On April 13 2019, children and families from Allen Jay and Hunter elementary schools participated in the Dual Language Literacy Day activities at UNC Greensboro. Allen Jay and Hunter are two schools in Guilford County Schools (GCS) that started the dual language programs in Spanish and Urdu last year. With over 40% of students in these two schools who are native Spanish or Urdu speakers, the dual language programs not only engaged the emergent bilinguals in the development of both English and their native languages, but also supported native-English speaking students who are interested in learning Spanish or Urdu as an additional language.
With the support from Project EnACTeD (Engaging and Advancing Community-Centered Teacher Development), funded by the National Professional Development grant, UNC Greensboro partnered with GCS to offer teacher professional development and support family engagement for dual language program participants. Teacher candidates from UNC Greensboro led dual language literacy activities and families also visited the local Barnes and Noble bookstore to shop for bilingual books. Children and families expressed their dreams and visions for dual language schools through artwork and multiple languages.
GCS district and school leaders, dual language educators from both schools, teacher candidates from UNC Greensboro, and the project EnACTeD team coordinated this visit and will continue the collaboration to support dual language learners and their families.
On December 2, 2019, students, teachers, and families at Hunter Elementary School hosted an event together with Project EnACTeD participants from UNC Greensboro to celebrate teaching and learning of languages and cultures. Students showcased their language learning through their performances.
All participants shared their thoughts about language teaching and learning. Hunter Elementary School is one of the 4 elementary schools in Guilford County Schools (GCS) that offers a Dual Language/Immersion (DL/I) program in Spanish. Since 2018-2019 academic year, the school started the DL/I program at the Kindergarten level and currently offers dual language classes at both Kindergarten and 1st grade levels. Ms. Analia Wells, Dual Language Curriculum Facilitator at Hunter Elementary School, together with several GCS leaders and educators including Carla Flores-Ballesteros, Mayra Hayes, Soledad Lardies-Dunst, Jackie Martinez-Vesga, and Kimberly Pilling, serves on the advisory board for Project EnACTeD, Engaging and Advancing Community-Centered Teacher Development, funded by the National Professional Development grant from the Department of Education. Since its launch in 2018, 33 educators completed Project EnACTeD teacher education programs at various levels. The project engaged 283 families and obtained feedback from 84 families to strengthen English language and dual language support for students and families from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
As participants shared, an ideal school is “a school that is inclusive to all languages, people”, “and teaches more languages to students”. With the support of families and local communities and through the collaboration between the school district and university teacher education program, we hope to continue and expand programs such as the DL/I program at Hunter!
Project IGNITE (formerly Project Enacted) continues to be one of the main supporters of our Dual Language program. Through our collaboration parents and educators come together to share their perspectives on teaching and learning languages and cultures. We are deeply grateful for their continued support.
