My opinion on frequently discussed issues related to par in disc golf:
- I believe that Close Range Par should be the standard for disc golf.
- "Rec Par" use on signs is an oxymoron. It's a worthless feel good concept and just plain dumb.
- "Pro par" is a step in the right direction, but the adjective "Pro" is redundant. The simple little 3 letter word "par" is sufficient. In my world, par is based on a 1000 rated player, mainly for comparison to SSA. Currently, most "Pro Par" is worthless because it's not derived from any consistent standard.
- The "everything is par 3" argument is just plain ignorant. Just check out Winthrop Gold used for the USDGC or Renaissance Gold, or Blue Valley in KC, or a plethora of long courses. Anyone who defends it is just espousing ignorance. Case closed.
- Tracking your score in relation to 3 is just an easy way to keep track of your score, but it has nothing to do with par. (Man is that broken record ever getting scratched!)
- The PDGA par guidelines are built on a flawed foundation. They're OK, but flawed. Par should not be based on scoring averages. This gets to the philosophy at the root of par.
