Social Security Disability Appointment Letters

When you apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), there are different types of appointment letters that you might receive while your claim is being processed.

One common appointment letter is for a Consultative Examination (CE). If you receive an appointment letter for a Consultative Exam, this usually means that your medical records are out of date or that your medical records do not address all the impairments you listed on your application for disability. This request for a CE comes from Disability Determination Services (DDS). You will be asked to visit a DDS contracted doctor, and the DDS will pay for this exam. The purpose of this exam is not to provide you with medical treatment but to get an updated medical evaluation of your disability. If you receive an Appointment Letter for a CE, make sure you or your SSI Attorney responds and attends the appointment, failing to do so will most likely lead to your application being denied.

Should I hire a professional disability lawyer?

Another common appointment letter is a notice that you will receive from the Office of Hearings and Appeals when a date has been set for your hearing. This of course only applies to you if you were denied benefits at the initial application level and the reconsideration appeal level and you requested a hearing. It is very important to respond to this letter and make sure you attend your hearing. It can take you many months and sometimes years to schedule a disability hearing, you don’t want to miss it. It is highly recommended that you hire a professional ssi lawyer representative (like a disability attorney) for your disability hearing. Your chances of wining your case are much higher when you are represented by a professional at your hearing.

Regarding all appointment letters, it is important for you to acknowledge your receipt of the letter and to attend the appointments to which they refer.
