PDE & AI Lab at Yonsei
Recent news regarding our group
Together with Inwon Kim (UCLA), In-Jee Jeong (KIAS), and Nam-Gyu Kang (KIAS), I am organizing a workshop titled “PDEs in Motion” at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS) in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The workshop will take place from Monday, September 7, to Saturday, September 12, 2026.
Apri 2026
Starting from April 2026, Dr. Jiseok Chae will join our lab as a postdoctoral research fellow. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from KAIST in Feb 2026 under the supervision of Prof. Donghwan Kim, and his research interests lie in minimax optimization theory and machine learning applications.
March 2026
We got a research grant, Young Scientist Grants, funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea, 2026 - 2031 (No. RS-2026-25488663).
I delivered a talk entitled “A Few Analytical Perspectives in Generative Modeling” at the 2026 KAIST Graduate School of AI for Math Opening Workshop.
I gave a colloquium talk at the School of Mathematics & Computing, Yonsei University.
My first doctoral student, Dohyeon Kwak, joined our group. Dohyeon completed his undergraduate studies in the Department of Mathematics at Yonsei University and then earned his master's degree under the supervision of Prof. Eun-Jae Park in our department. Welcome!
I joined the School of Mathematics & Computing (Computational Science & Engineering) at Yonsei University as an Assistant Professor.
The PDE & AI Lab studies mathematical theory and algorithms at the intersection of partial differential equations, optimization, and artificial intelligence. Our current interests include
Optimal Transport (see this article by Prof. Young-Heon Kim at UBC), Partial Differential Equations (Dohyun's seminar talk regarding mean curvature flow)
Optimization (Dohyun's YouTube video, Korean)
Machine Learning Theory, Generative Models (Dohyun's seminar talk(Korean) at KIAS regarding diffusion models)
We develop rigorous analytical tools for understanding machine learning problems and apply them to design and improve modern learning algorithms. See these keynote slides (English) or here (Korean) for more information.
In our group, we aim to
Investigate analytic problems of PDEs and optimal transport arising from real-world applications.

Graduate Students Hiring
I am looking for motivated graduate students interested in partial differential equations, machine learning, optimization, and/or optimal transport.
All majors including but not limited to Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, or Engineering are welcome, but a solid background in mathematics is essential.
If you are interested in joining our PDE & AI group at Yonsei University, please contact me with your transcript and a short paragraph describing your research interests.
The deadline for this fall's admission is Monday, April 13, 2026. See here (regarding application procedure) for more information.
Postdoctoral Fellowship
I have a couple of postdoctoral positions available.
Undergraduate Students Internship
Our department, the School of Mathematics & Computing (Computational Science & Engineering), has a well-established summer/winter internship program for undergraduate students. Students from all majors are welcome to apply, including those from universities around the world. In other words, applicants do not need to be undergraduate students at Yonsei University.
For application details, please visit https://cseurpyonsei.weebly.com/admission.html. Applications are typically submitted in May for summer intership and in November for winter internship. If you have any questions, please contact me or csedept@yonsei.ac.kr.
