What is a SAG?

Supply and Gear (SAG) volunteers drive vans and transport cyclists who are unable to ride.

SAG drivers must have a valid Texas Drivers License, proof of insurance, average visual acuity, ability to drive a large cargo van through tight rider and pedestrian areas, and the ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

It is important that SAG drives practice patience and are able to handle high-pressure situations.

Each SAG is encouraged to have at least two persons.  One to drive and the other to navigate, communicate, help be situation aware, and to aid in the loading and unloading of the SAG vehicle. (Adapted from the BP-MS Ride website)

What time do I need to be at SAG staging?

0600 hours each day

We ask that you be at the SAG staging one hour before the ride start. This will allow time to pair up operators, vehicles and drivers. A briefing will be held for any questions you may have.  We ask that everyone attends the briefing (even seasoned volunteers). This is also the time that APRS equipment will be installed if not done previously, and SAG numbers will be validated and applied to the vehicles for your info.

Where is SAG Staging?

Please review the Documents/Files section and our SITE maps for the SAG staging location.  The SAG should also familiarize themselves with the Water Stop layouts maps for where to park and load passengers and gear.  Listen to the Talk-In frequency and monitor the discussion on this site as well as the Yahoo Group for announcements.

Where do I pick up and drop off my SAG vehicle?

Information will be provided in the SAG documents (bottom of page) and email from your SAG coordinator.

How do I pay for fuel?

You will be provided a gas card when you pick up your SAG vehicle.

How long is my shift?

Aside from the one hour prior to the scheduled start, you should expect to be operational for the duration of the event. This may increase or decrease pending special circumstances such as weather incidents or major route changes or many other things that may occur.

 What things do I need?

Comfort items such as clothing appropriate for the current and changing weather.  Closed-toed shoes, sunscreen, bug spray, medications, comfort food/drinks.  Cell phone charger/cables/power splitters.

 What is my assignment?

Assignments will be available on the Assignments Page section.  They may change.  Be sure to check for the latest.

Every effort will be made to pair you up with a Ham Radio Operator (if you aren't one).

Routes

All route information, maps, and smartphone maps will be found on the Route Page

Site Maps

All site maps, including Start/Finish, Rest Stops, SAG drop offs, etc., will be found on the Documents/Files page.

Can I have flashing lights on my vehicle?

A rotator or similar amber light will be provided for each SAG vehicle.  This light is intended to increase the visibility of your vehicle and identify to the participants and staff that you are part of the event.

AGE Requirements for SAGs.

SAG drivers are to be of an age of 21 years or older.  The co-pilot must be of an age of 14 years or older and have a waiver signed by a parent or adult guardian.
