Established in 2011, the Design Studio at the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) serves as a multidisciplinary platform for innovation, product design, prototyping, fabrication, and technology development. The Studio was established in recognition of the growing importance of creativity and innovation in engineering education and has continually encouraged students and researchers to transform innovative ideas into functional products and engineering solutions. The Design Studio houses a diverse collection of developed and manufactured products across multiple engineering disciplines and provides an environment where ideas can progress from conceptual design and CAD modelling to prototype development, fabrication, testing, and refinement. Its fabrication capabilities include CNC milling and turning, high-precision SLA 3D printing using Formlabs technology, electronic fabrication facilities, mechanical prototyping, and supporting manufacturing resources, enabling students to develop both basic prototypes and advanced functional products.
The Studio also promotes digital product design and development, including CAD-based modelling, virtual prototyping, design visualization, digital fabrication, user-interface concepts, and integration of electronics and smart technologies into modern products. These capabilities help students understand the complete digital product-development workflow from concept generation to manufacturable design. In addition to physical product development, the Design Studio encourages innovation for the service industry, where design thinking, user-centred design, process improvement, digital interfaces, customer experience, and service-system development play an increasingly important role. This broader approach enables students to develop solutions not only for manufacturing and engineering sectors but also for healthcare, agriculture, education, mobility, hospitality, digital services, and other emerging service-based industries.
Over the years, the Studio has contributed to projects in agricultural mechanization, stubble management, urban farming, hydroponics and multiponics, sustainable products, reverse engineering, smart products, and innovative machinery development, with several technologies progressing towards patents and technology implementation. The Design Studio is currently led by Prof. Prabir Sarkar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Ropar, whose work focuses on product design, sustainability, design creativity, and the development of innovative and socially relevant engineering solutions.
