All About Demulsifiers and Its Types
A demulsifier is a special kind of chemical which is used to separate an emulsion. Now what exactly is an emulsion? An emulsion is a mixture of two or more substances which cannot mix or blend with each other. The most common example of an emulsion is the water and oil which can never mix with each other. The demulsfier is known as emulsion breaker because it can separate these substances in an emulsion. Many other chemicals are available in the market which can separate an emulsion, but to choose one of them depends on the emulsion to be separated. The decision of which demulsifier to choose also depends on the proportion of each substance in an emulsion. Generally, the proportion of all the substances in an emulsion are not equal. In an industrial production, normally there are two types of emulsions which need to be separated either oil in water or water in oil. The most prevalent substance is known as matrix and the substance that is in the matrix, exists in the droplets. In some cases the emulsions are unstable and so it becomes easy to separate the substances. Whereas, in some cases the emulsion requires lot of intervention, this is where demulsifiers are used. There are various uses of demulsifiers which are given below:-
The demulsifiers are used in the processing of crude oil. Before refining the crude oil, it becomes necessary to remove water and salt from the oil to prevent corrosion problems.
To remove the electrostatic forces of repulsion reacting between the water droplets, demulsifiers are used.
The demulsifiers also change the wet ability of the solid micro-particles absorbed at the interface or form some inverse emulsion oil-in-water, thus destabilizing the water-in-oil emulsion.
Normally the demulsifiers are injected pure but it also depends on the nature of the emulsion and its surface equipment on the decision for the demulsifiers injection point.
Adding a demulsfier to a mixture causes the droplets to break away from the other substances in that mixture. Once the droplets are broken, there is a tendency that they form bigger structures. The foamy consistency in a similar manner can be easily separated.
The demulsifiers are also used to clean oil spills which may occur at sea. Using a demulsifier works easily where emulsions are not too stable.
As there are chances of field conditions being changed over its lifetime, it becomes necessary to improve demulsfier performance on a regular basis. Basically, there are two types of demulsifiers, oil soluble demulsifiers and water soluble demulsifiers. The type of demulsifier to be used depends on the kind of emulsions to be separated. When the correct demulsifier is used, the other substances can be controlled in a mixture. The substances react in a different manner to particular chemicals. With the help of demulsifiers, the adverse effects on the substances can be avoided. In an attempt to demulsify a mixture, the other substances should not be compromised and so the right kind of demulsfier should be used in particular mixture. It is a known fact that water can drastically change the properties of crude oil and so demulsifying of the material becomes essential.
