The Most Valuable Idea
After reading their book for class, students will identify what they consider to be a primary theme of the novel. They will then endeavor to find an article about a more current issue in society that relates to that theme. Students will attach a copy of their chosen article to the left side of a sheet of paper. On the right side of the paper, they will identify the theme that they have chosen and explain how it correlates to the article. The goal is for students to make connections between the novel they have read and contemporary issues, for them see the novel’s relevance in the grander scheme of things. (Figure 8.4)
Casting Call
After reading a book for class, students cast the primary characters of that novel using famous personalities (politicians, celebrities, star athletes, scientists, etc.). They must delve beneath mere surface, superficial comparisons and provide true justification for their choices. Some points of comparison might include personality traits, physical attributes, acumen, and the like. This activity will serve as a meaningful bridge between the novel that they have read and the world outside of their classroom.
