Since I began my graduate studies at Duke University, I have taken advantage of the many opportunities for instruction on teaching. The Introduction to College Teaching was particularly useful in exposing me to current trends in pedagogy and shaping my teaching philosophy. These ideas were further developed in the Seminar in Teaching College Biology which particularly sparked my interest in scientific teaching. Finally, over 4 years I attended numerous Teaching Ideas workshops offered by the graduate school; together these adapted my thinking on employing active learning strategies, accommodating variably-sized diverse college classes, and optimizing the use of assessments.
Although these classes were invaluable to evolving my abstract thoughts on teaching, it helped to have a currently working educator with which to discuss specific cases.
