Ducklings imprint on their mother at birth so they know how to follow their mother. In a very cute experiment, scientists demonstrate that this "imprinting" is based on abstract visual concepts that allow the duckling to recognize their mother in different states (walking, swimming, etc.). Said experiment involved setting up a duckling to imprint on a specific combinations of shapes/colours and testing whether they will recognize the same pattern (although not necessarily the same combination) later.
