On a similar note these there's a project from 3 room mates in Canada who decided to stop buying anything that created waste for year.
The project is called: The Clean Bin Project
* They created in a year the amount a waste we create in a day!
"But what I can say is that as a household of three adults we produced about 12 pounds (5.4kg) of garbage during our year."

The Recycle Bank: they are encouraging citizens to recycle by provided a point reward system. Pretty cool.
Also, TerraCycle is a great example of a company who creates products with our waste.
