Her Majesty the Queen recently presented operational medals to soldiers from the Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry at Lichfield Cathedral in Staffordshire.

The Queen attended the Regiment's Homecoming Parade and Thanksgiving Service in her role as the Regiment’s Colonel-in-Chief. The event recognised the contribution of those soldiers from the Territorial Army Regiment who deployed on Op Herrick 13 to Afghanistan. She shook hands and talked briefly with soldiers as she presented them with their medals for their service at various bases.

Her Majesty was welcomed by the Bishop of Lichfield and The Dean of Lichfield, the Very Reverend Adrian Dorber, who said: "It is with pleasure that we welcome you to this cathedral in order to give thanks for the safe return of the soldiers of the Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry."

The Queen agreed to have her photo taken with the regiment and also took the time to speak to some of the soldiers families thereafter.

A five-month tour of duty saw 35 soldiers and officers operating the Army’s latest base protection surveillance equipment at various Forward Operating Bases in Helmand Province.

The Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry is an armoured regiment made up of four Squadrons, two are based in the West Midlands with a further two based here in the North West of England, C (The Cheshire Yeomanry) Squadron based in Chester; and D (The Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry) Squadron, based in Wigan.
