2009 was a real year of discovery for me in terms of music. When Sox sent out the email about making a list I was pretty excited. Then, as I tried to compile the list, I realized that I wasn’t exactly on the cutting edge because a significant portion of what I was planning to include on my list actually came out in 2008 (or before). In attempting to stick to the intent of the list, I’m going to exclude everything that didn’t come out in 2009 though I’d like to mention that I really loved Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson’s self-titled debut (It’s opening track, Buriedfed, is the most played song on my iTunes), Frightened Rabbit’s Midnight Organ Fight, and Tallest Man on Earth – Shallow Grave.
I like to take Oxycontin and listen to this. – Billy Joe Armstrong
STANDOUT TRACK(S): Orange Shirt, Carby
STANDOUT TRACK(S): Plans
This was probably my favorite band from 1999 to the time the “Pearl Jam” album came out, then I pretty much abandoned them completely (yes, I was with them through the Riot Act years). I listened to this album pretty steadily up until I saw them play the last show at the Spectrum. They still play a pretty great show.
STANDOUT TRACK(S): The Fixer, Just Breathe, Amongst the Waves
I mainly listen to whatever Bob Boilen tells me to on the All Songs podcast
STANDOUT TRACK(S): Mightiest of Guns, I Can See the Pines are Dancing
STANDOUT TRACK(S): The Walls Are Coming Down, Harold T. Wilkins or How to Wait a Very Long Time
The album as a whole is probably not worthy of this high of a rating, but it starts with 2 pop tracks so perfect I couldn’t rate in any lower. If you don’t like 1901, I’m not sure I can be your friend. (Of note: I’ve also made this claim about Okkervil River – Unless It Kicks and Kelly Clarkson – Since You’ve Been Gone)
To me, this album more than any other on the list, highlights how much my taste in music has changed in the last decade. (In the spring of 2001, I saw Godsmack, Stain’d, and Cold. At the time, it was the best concert I had ever seen. To be fair, I grew up near State College and could choose between a country station, a pop station, a station that played 70s rock, and a station that mixed these bands with Puddle of Mudd and System of A Down. The fact that I have yet to drown a kitten or put some firecrackers up a rodent’s ass separates me from like 86% of my high school graduating class.)
STANDOUT TRACK(S): Sleepyhead, The Reeling, To Kingdom Come
I originally thought I shouldn’t put this on the list because it is a compilation of many artists, but it is an album that was released in 2009 so I went with it. This is a who’s-who’s of artists loved by NPR/XPN. I’m not sure it works as a cohesive unit, but there are definitely some excellent individual tracks, especially on the first disc (disk?). [Obviously disk. I love looking online for diskographies. And listening to floppy disk jockies. -Ed]
STANDOUT TRACK(S): Knotty Pine, The Giant of Illinois, Tightrope, So Far Around the Bend, Deep Blue Sea, Brackett, WI, I Was Young When I Left Home
I’ve actually been thinking about burning a copy of this album for my parents.
STANDOUT TRACK(S): I and Love and You, Perfect Space, Kick Drum Heart
Every summer, I tend to get stuck on an album and listen to it every day with my windows down while I drive. This was that album this summer, blowing Phoenix, the early favorite, out of the water. Sadly, I was introduced to this album by this: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/b080b3abab/my-mother-s-red-hat-w-alicia-silverstone-alanis-morissette. Later, I saw them with Sox and Kandace and it was pretty excellent. I actually like all the tracks on this album.
Post Script: What the fuck happened to Alicia Silverstone? I think she may be joining Susan Sarandon, Dean Cain, Wilmer Valderama and Kelsey Grammer some time soon. Her role in Clueless will make people care just enough for this to work.
