David A. Winer
David Winer retired in June, 2014 after thirty-seven years as a professional public school music educator. He capped his public school career as the K-12 Supervisor of Music for the Westport, CT Public Schools. Soon after "retirement", David accepted a part-time position as Director of the Wind Ensemble at The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, CT where he also coaches chamber ensembles and teaches brass private lessons. After public school retirement, David served the Connecticut Music Educators Association (CMEA) as Northern Region Director and as Chair of the Student Affairs Commission for CMEA, the body which oversees all regions and festivals.
David earned degrees from The New England Conservatory of Music, the University of Connecticut, and the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from the University of Hartford/Hartt School. Mr. Winer has been privileged to have studied with some of the world’s finest musicians in the areas of tuba (Thompson "Toby" Hanks and Chester Schmitz), conducting (Frank Battisti and Gary Green), chamber music (Roger Voisin and John Swallow), and music theory (Joseph Maneri and Avo Sohmer). In addition, as a frequent festival band chair, he has spent considerable time learning from the likes of Frederick Fennell, Walter Chestnut, Peter Martin (U. of So. Maine), and other exceptional talents. David's extensive performance background includes a dozen years as Principal Tubaist with the Portland, Maine Symphony Orchestra and Brass Quintet, and many performances with artists such as Aaron Copland, Arthur Fiedler, Gunther Schuller, The Canadian Brass, the Barnum and Bailey Circus Band, and many other world-class artists, professional orchestras and bands.
Mr. Winer’s career as a band director and conductor spanned thirty years at Avon High School and The Gilbert School in Connecticut, and at Portland High School in Portland, Maine. While in Maine, he also served as Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Southern Maine, and founded and directed the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble. Many of Mr. Winer’s former students have succeeded in musical careers as performers and/or educators at the school and collegiate levels - his students have attended Eastman, Peabody, North Texas State, Hartt, Cleveland Institute, Ithaca College, Boston University and other fine schools. He has always strived to offer inspiring musical experiences that contribute to an enriched, more fulfilling and musical life for all of his students - his students are successful teachers, doctors, researchers, lawyers, engineers, and human beings.
David Winer has conducted and chaired concert bands at more than seventy festivals, and has served as Festival Chairman for fifteen Regional and All-State Festivals. In addition, he has contributed articles to several books and professional journals, and mentored over thirty student and new teachers. He has conducted festival bands for most of CT Music Educators Association's regional festivals, as well as most of CT's athletic league music festivals. In addition, he has conducted festival bands in New York and other New England states.
Mr. Winer is an elected member of The American School Band Directors Association and several music honor societies and fraternities; he is a member of the National Association for Music Education, Connecticut Music Educators Association, Connecticut Arts Administrators Association, Connecticut Arts Alliance, and the International Tuba and Euphonium Association.
